What is humanism and who are humanists?

“Humanism is the belief that we can live good lives without religious or superstitious belief. Humanists make sense of life using reason, experience and shared human values. We seek to make the best of the one life we have by creating meaning and purpose for ourselves. We take responsibility for our own actions and work for the common good.” (BHA 2003)

Humanists are ordinary human beings who believe that you can BE GOOD WITHOUT GOD.

They/we also think that:

This world and this life are all we have

We should try to live full and happy lives ourselves and, as part of this, make it easier for other people to do the same

All situations and people deserve to be judged on their merits by standards of reason and humanity

Individuality and social co-operation are equally important

(A J Ayer, 1960s)
